The intention of this design is to add a more compelling attraction to the Exposition Palace and the Exposition Park with a modest gesture aboveground. This design would explore the architectural challenge in the subterranean spaces and provide the programs of the new contemporary art wing. The site is in a contextually interactive open space, located next to the Exposition Palace at the south entrance of the city’s historic center and the northern gateway of the Exposition Park. We want to recreate this site to not only play a role for the art wing but also in the daily lives of the people in Lima. We want to clearly define this site as a container for contemporary art, but also recognize the importance of the area being a historical heritage site with designed crevices similar to the dry moat and steps of Machu Picchu. Natural lighting is the most challenging element in subterranean spaces. To address this, we would utilize natural light during the day with a skylight inspired by the shape of the Chakana, a significant symbol in Peruvian culture and acknowledgement of the Incas. We would also bring sufficient natural lighting to the bottom level (12m below ground level) through the crevices composed of asymmetrically folded walls in the middle of the new wing. In addition, we would like to propose an outdoor garden space at the bottom level for users of the educational facilities to provide an unexpected yet pleasant experience in the subterranean space.
